Jacqueline du Pré, 1962: Adagio, from the Toccata in C, BWV 564

In this performance recorded July 15, 1962, seventeen year-old Jacqueline du Pré (1945-1987), accompanied by Roy Jesson (1926-1972), performs the Adagio from Bach's Toccata in C major, BWV 564. I created this music video from the LP, "A Jacqueline du Pré Recital," issued on the Angel label, serial number S-37900. All images, with the exception of those at the video's conclusion, are taken from the LP and LP jacket.

Villa-Lobos, 1958: Fugue No. 21 in B flat major, BWV 890 (transcribed by Villa-Lobos)

Heitor Villa-Lobos conducts the Violincello Society in this 1958 recording of Bach's Fugue No. 21 in B flat major, BWV 890, from Book 1 of the Well Tempered Clavier. Villa-Lobos transcribed this work (as well as several others from Book 1 of the WTC) for what the LP jacket describes as an "orchestra of cellos." I created this video from the LP you can see above, issued in 1959 on the Everest label, serial number LPBR-6024.

In this 1951 recording, Karl Münchinger (1915-1990) conducts the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra in a performance of the second movement of Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 in D major, BWV 1050. I created this video from the LP depicted above, issued in 1953 on the London label, serial number LL 222. This recording won the 1951 Grand Prix Du Disque.

In this 1951 recording, Karl Münchinger (1915-1990) conducts the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra in a performance of the third movement of Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 in D major, BWV 1050. I created this video from the LP depicted above, issued in 1953 on the London label, serial number LL 222. This recording won the 1951 Grand Prix Du Disque.

Daniel Saidenberg (1906-1997) conducts the Baroque Chamber Orchestra. Other performers on this LP include Robert Conant and Teddy Saidenberg.
